WEST WARWICK, RI -- (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Astro-Med, Inc. (NASDAQ: ALOT) announced today that it has introduced the ToughWriter 5, the smallest, lightest ARINC744A-1 printer available in the industry. The ToughWriter 5 was displayed at the National Business Aviation Association's 62nd Annual Meeting & Convention (NBAA2009) in Orlando, FL, October 20-22, 2009, and was extremely well received.
The ToughWriter 5 weighs just 8.5 pounds with a full roll of paper installed and is several inches shallower than other flight deck printers, making it ideal for business jet and other commercial customers that are sensitive to size and weight.
Despite being smaller and lighter than other airborne printers, the ToughWriter 5 will be the fastest, highest resolution printer in the world and is the first airborne printer with WiFi capability.
Tom Carll, National Sales Manager for Astro-Med's Test & Measurement Product Group, comments on the introduction, "We are excited with the opportunity that the ToughWriter 5 offers. Its predecessor, the ToughWriter 4 printer, has been very well received in the business/regional jet, commercial and military markets. We expect the ToughWriter 5 to expand our share of the business/regional jet market and other markets where size and weight are important. In addition, for the first time, WiFi capability will allow sending print jobs to the ToughWriter 5 from a computer located anywhere in the aircraft."
Carll continued, "Although the economic downturn has impacted the business jet and commercial aircraft industries, we feel the long-term potential in these markets is significant and are poised to capture market share as the industry rebounds. There are several important aircraft programs that we are pursuing and the ToughWriter 5 is critical to this future business."
The NBAA Annual Meeting & Convention is billed as the premier event and annual meeting place for the business aviation community. It brings together a global community of business leaders, government officials, manufacturers, flight department personnel, single-pilot operations and all manner of people involved in nearly every aspect of business aviation. Aircraft, avionics, engines, aircraft interiors, navigation equipment, composite material and other products used on business jets will be exhibited at the convention.
Astro-Med is currently furnishing airborne printers for the Airbus A380 and A400M, the Boeing C-17, B-787, B-777, B-747, B-767, and the Lockheed C-130 and the Bombardier Global Vision flight deck.
Astro-Med, Inc. is a leading manufacturer of high tech specialty printing systems, electronic medical instrumentation, and test and measurement instruments employed around the world in a wide range of industrial, scientific and medical applications.
Availability for the ToughWriter 5 will be mid-2010. Visit Astro-Med, Inc. at http://www.astro-med.com/tmindex.html for further information.

WEST WARWICK, RI -- (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Astro-Med, Inc. (NASDAQ: ALOT) announced today that it has been certified to AS9100, the quality management system specifically designed for manufacturers of aerospace industry products.
Everett V. Pizzuti, President and COO, stated, "Companies in the aerospace industry are increasingly selecting suppliers on the basis of AS9100 certification. Achieving certified status means that Astro-Med can now bring in new business that may have been outside our reach in the past, and that we will be able to continue to satisfy our existing aerospace customers long into the future."
Astro-Med's Ruggedized Products will benefit most directly from the AS9100 certification, according to Pizzuti. Astro-Med Ruggedized airborne printers and ruggedized Ethernet switches are sold to the commercial and military aerospace industry, as well as to non-aerospace customers.
According to the company, AS9100 is more rigorous than the ISO 9001 standard to which many manufacturers certify, with AS9100 incorporating all of the ISO 9001 requirements as well as additional aerospace specific requirements that are used to plan, build, test, and deliver products and services for the aerospace industry.
Commenting on the AS9100 certification, Steven G. Holbrook, Astro-Med's Manager of Quality Assurance, said, "Our Quality Management System forms the bedrock upon which we stand as a quality-driven manufacturer, and AS9100 certification underscores our firm foundation. The aerospace industry requires very high reliability products, and while AS9100 certification is most relevant to our ruggedized airborne products, we maintain the same discipline throughout our quality process. I am pleased and proud that Astro-Med, Inc. maintains the highest quality management standards for each industry sector we serve."
In addition to holding AS9100 certification, Astro-Med is an FAA part 145 certified repair station, is certified to ISO 9001:2008 which specifies requirements to provide products that meet applicable customer, statutory, and regulatory requirements within a system of continual improvement, and is also certified to ISO 13485:2003, which specifies requirements for a quality management system that provides medical devices and related services that consistently meet customer requirements and applicable regulatory requirements.
Astro-Med's AS9100 certification was issued by Intertek, the world's largest independent testing, inspection, and certification body. According to the Holbrook, Astro-Med, Inc. spent over a year developing new systems and processes to meet the demanding requirements of the AS9100 Quality Management System, and Astro-Med attained one of the highest scores possible after the two stage Intertek audit, which included a full week of on-site review and inspection.

WEST WARWICK, RI -- (MARKET WIRE via COMTEX News Network) -- Astro-Med, Inc. (NASDAQ: ALOT) today announced the introduction of a high-frequency, portable data recorder, the latest in its "Dash" brand family of data recorders for test and measurement applications. The ultra-compact "Dash 20HF" offers 20 channels of data recording directly to a 250 GB hard drive at extremely high sample rates of 500 kHz per channel.
Commenting on the rapid data capture speed of the high-frequency Dash 20HF, David Kortick, Senior Manager of Product Development, said, "We are pushing the physical limits of hard drives in order to write data at higher speeds in our Dash family. We've designed the Dash 8HF, Dash 32HF and now the Dash 20HF high-frequency recorders to use only the fastest hard drives that can keep up with our data rates."
Beginning with the innovative Dash 8HF data recorder introduced in 2006, Astro-Med's high-frequency Dash recorders have offered a hybrid functionality that delivers the best of both worlds to engineers: isolated analog channels to protect the user and equipment from dangerous signal measurements, and differential channels for common sensor measurements found in industrial, automotive, aerospace and military applications.
"Dash recorders allow engineers to capture data at extremely high sample rates and immediately analyze that information on-screen so they can make decisions at the point of use. In troubleshooting applications, the ability to make a rapid, on-site decision to manage a problem can save our customers a substantial amount of time and money," said Peter Nadeau, Product Manager of the Astro-Med Test & Measurement brand.
The Dash 20HF includes a DVD burner for archiving data for later review and analysis, a Gigabit Ethernet connection for data upload and host control, and two USB 2.0 ports for archiving data to external peripherals. The unit is also available in an optional high-security version called the Dash 20HF-HS for use in sensitive defense and aerospace applications.
Astro-Med Dash data recorders provide an all-in-one acquisition and analysis solution that combines the functionality of a computer hard drive, analysis software, keyboard, and mouse into a single, self-contained unit with a touch-screen interface that captures data in real-time and immediately presents it for review and analysis.
Dash data recorders can be used in virtually any engineering lab or in on-site product verification in applications ranging from transient capture to remote troubleshooting in the aerospace, automotive, defense, electric utility, medical, metals manufacturing, and pulp and paper fields. Astro-Med often uses its Dash data recorders in its own manufacturing process to test and measure its products, including its ruggedized cockpit printers, industrial label printers, PSG and EEG systems, and other Dash recorders.
Astro-Med introduced its first Dash series portable data recorder in 1973, and now offers 7 Dash models which are available in various portable, rackmount, and high-security configurations, including: the Dash 2EZ+, D8Xe, D8XeR, D8XPM, D8HF, D8HF-HS, D18X, D18XR, D20HF, D20HF-HS, D32HF, and D32HF-HS. More information about the Dash brand family is available at http://www.astro-med.com/products/portables.html.
